Welcome toSWEET FERN PRESS

We are a small press located in Maine and specializing in family history, place-based history, and memoir.

Why the sweet fern? The sweet fern is native to the northeast, where we are located. It is actually a small shrub not a fern that has remarkable capacity to adapt to varying environments and, perhaps most important, to improving them.

The deeply lobed leave are fragrant when crushed and the catkins and fruits benefit birds including flickers and provide cover for rabbits and grouse. Deer and moose browse on the shrub in the winter. It’s a hard-working plant than benefits its environment, which we at Sweet Fern Press will try to do as well.

Our first book is Both Sides of the Pond, My Family’s War: 1933 – 1945. We are not soliciting other manuscripts at this time. We are, however, building a team to do so in the future.
